The abandoned Battleship Island of Japan

Battleship Island of JapanThe battleship island in Japan also known as Hashima Island was actually centered on a mining facility owned by Mitsubishi. This island had one of the most populous islands in the world with 13000 people per sq km. It operated from 1887 to 1974 until the coal market was at an all time high but with the crash in the coal industry in the 1970’s no one wanted to live in the mini urban nightmare of a city.

Unemployed people almost immediately left their homes and much of their belonging to rot in this city and went forth to the mainland. With lack of outdoor space and cramped living quarter the island had little to offer to human residing there. Now it lies uninhabited in all its glory with broken down building facades and destruction caused by rot all around. It is decreed illegal to set foot on this island and is punishable to up to 30 years in prison.
