You must visit the Colosseum of Rome, probably the most famous historical monument of the Roman civilization. It is that famous place where the Gladiator fight used to take place in those days. It was built by the emperors of the Flavian dynasty and is thus know as Amphitheatre Flavium. It is situated near the Roman Forum. It was the only source of entertainment in those days. You must also visit places like Castel Saint Angelo which was built to be used as a mausoleum but was also used by popes in the later period as a castle for staying protected.

You must not miss the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II or the national monument of Rome which is now used by the ministry as the assembly. Change of guards take place here ever day in the afternoon. You can also see the infamous balcony from where the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini has declared his participation in the World War II. Just behind the National Monument is the famous Senate House of ancient Rome where Julius Caesar was murdered. Even places like Fontana Trevi, Piazza Navona, Piazza Del popolo Santa Maria, etc deserve special mention in terms of historical importance.
